Finding Balance After a Hectic Month

Regroup & Recharge

The past four weeks have been a little topsy turvy. I jumped into a last-minute four-person show, had my parents in town, met some lofty goals at work… and while those accomplishments feel great, other things fell by the wayside. Mainly: my feeling of equilibrium.

This past weekend, although it was the closing of Love/Perfect, I made some crucial decisions that should help me regain my footing.

Closet Cleanse

Saturday morning I slept in, ate a delicious breakfast, and then deep-cleaned my apartment, did three loads of laundry, and gutted my wardrobe of any unwanted stragglers. It always feels good to let go of items that don’t serve you. It’s a sigh of relief and declutters what you look at every day.

Lazy Sunday

After our closing matinee, the cast, crew, and I helped break down the set, pack up all our costumes and props, and said our goodbyes. Exhausted and run down, I went home and found Nick waiting for me with sparkling rose and plans to order sushi and watch The People vs. OJ Simpson in bed. Just, I love that man. It was the perfect way to nourish body and soul. (It was also our 1-year anniversary, which we’re going to celebrate properly this Saturday at Barolo!)

The Hard Nos

Working a demanding full-time job, trying to maintain my fitness and overall physical health, and indulging in musical theater around Colorado has been quite the balancing act (not to mention getting good, quality time in with the man and myself). I’ve had some roles offered to me and some auditions lined up, and in the end, I’ve had to politely decline. Quality over quality.

I have a constant conflict between wanting to beef up my theater resume, and wanting to be more exacting in each next show I commit to. As much as I’d love to do all the shows that come along, I have to be more deliberate and selective with my time and energy. It’s so difficult, but if I were to keep saying yes to everything, it would certainly deplete my overall peace and happiness. I’m sure this is something most people can relate to. Saying no is hard, but you can tell it’s the right choice by the relief that follows.

How do you recharge?

Down time is so important, and as someone who also balances working full time, theatre commitments, and having a semblance of a social life, it’s HARD. I’m in a production of 9 to 5 the musical right now, and about to audition for Dogfight the musical for the summer. I’ve decided that I’ll only take a lead role, because that’s the best use of my time and energy. If I don’t get it, I get some much-needed time off, so it’s a win-win. Enjoy your rest!

Me, recharge? I just keep running with my battery light blinking and grab a quick plug-in when I can. I can SO relate to this post, although I do non-musical, community theatre. I don’t care if I beef up my resume, but I just can’t seem to say no. Also, I never quite get around to purging my closet. That lovely picture of neatness you shared will never be found in my house! So I guess I’m saying I relate to this post even though my life is really not a whole lot like yours. Congratulations on a good show and a great night with your husband. Happy Anniversary and rock on!
